Guide Review - San Jamar Saf-T-Grip™ Cutting Boards

Cutting boards are pretty low tech. Their main purpose is to lie flat and not move around. Many cutting boards fall short of even these minimal requirements, however. Because they're made of hard plastic, they slide around on prep tables and other smooth work surfaces typically found in kitchens. After a few trips through that high-heat commercial dishwasher, they start to warp badly, making them even less stable. In addition to being annoying, this can be dangerous, too, since sharp knives and wobbly cutting boards don't mix.

The solution? It's commonplace for cooks to set their cutting boards on top of a wet kitchen towel to keep them from sliding around -- not exactly a sanitary practice.

The Saf-T-Grip™ line of cutting boards from San Jamar is designed with safety and sanitation in mind. It features integrated anti-slip grips that hold the board in position as well as keeping it elevated off the countertop. That way, when a cook goes to flip the board over to use the other side, the bottom has not touched the table -- much less a soaking wet towel.

The cut-out "food safety hook" means the boards can be hung from wire racks to air dry, and lets workers carry the board across a kitchen without tucking it under their arm, or even touching the cutting surface at all. It even features a ruler --inches on one side and centimeters on the other -- to aid in consistent, uniform portioning. The boards come in the standard color-coded system designed to prevent cross-contamination by keeping boards dedicated to prepping raw meat, for instance, separate from boards used to prep raw vegetables.

Smartly designed and innovative, the Saf-T-Grip™ cutting board really is an impressive tool. If you're purchasing these for a restaurant or foodservice operation, get enough for all your cooks because no one will want to use any other board.
