When it comes to favorite breakfast foods, French toast is often at the top of the list. But using the same old sandwich bread can become ho-hum. This recipe calls for an extra-thick bread, such as Texas toast which is double the thickness of regular bread. What results is a French toast with a crispy exterior and creamy interior, perfect for topping with syrup and fruit.

Similar to other French toast recipes, this one calls for making a custard with eggs, half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla. Because you are using extra-thick bread, it's important to make sure that the egg mixture is fully absorbed; otherwise, the French toast will be dry at the center of the slices. And since the bread is so thick, the cooking is done in two steps: First, the slices are browned on the griddle, then they are finished cooking in the oven to make sure they cook all the way through.

When choosing a dish in which to dip the bread slices in the custard, make sure it is deep enough that the bread can be submerged completely; this will assure the egg mixture has reached the center.

Serve this thick French toast with your favorite sweet breakfast toppings, such as real maple syrup, jam, bananas, and fresh berries.

Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 cup half-and-half

  • 2 teaspoons sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

  • 4 slices Texas toast, or other extra-thick bread

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Steps to Make It

  1. Gather the ingredients. Preheat the oven to 425 F.

  2. In a bowl or deep measuring cup, beat the eggs thoroughly. Whisk in the half-and-half, sugar, and vanilla.

  3. Pour the custard mixture into a shallow glass dish; it should be at least 2 inches deep to ensure the extra-thick bread can be fully submerged.

  4. Heat a griddle to medium-low and melt the butter on it.

  5. Soak a couple of slices of bread (but only as many your griddle can accommodate at once) in the custard for 10 seconds. Flip them over and repeat.

  6. Carefully remove the soaked slices from the custard, letting the excess liquid drip into the dish, and transfer the bread to the griddle. Cook until the bottoms are golden brown and then flip over. When the other sides are also golden brown, remove them from the griddle to a baking sheet.

  7. Transfer the browned French toast to the oven and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until the custard at the center is fully cooked.

  8. Serve right away and enjoy.

Recipe Variations

  • Cinnamon French Toast: Add a dash to 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon to the custard mixture.
  • Stuffed French Toast: Before soaking the bread in the custard, cut a slit into one side of the bread to create a pocket. Fill with a sweetened cream cheese mixture or Nutella and proceed with the recipe.
  • French Toast Sticks: Cut the Texas toast into strips before soaking and cooking.
  • Sheet Pan French Toast: Use a sheet tray to bake multiple pieces of French toast when cooking for a crowd.
