Definition: In the culinary arts, chili powder is a blend of ground dried chilies and other spices and herbs.
Chili Powder vs Cayenne Pepper: Chili powder isn't the same as cayenne pepper. Pure cayenne pepper is much hotter than chili powder. Indeed, cayenne pepper is one of several ingredients that go into making chili powder, but they're not interchangeable.
Other ingredients in chili powder can include paprika, cumin, oregano, garlic powder and salt.
Chili Powder Recipe: If a recipe you are making calls for chili powder and you don't have any, the following mixture would be a great chili powder substitute:
- 1 Tbsp ground cumin
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp ground oregano
This will make a little less than 3 Tbsp of chili powder. Double it if you need more. Store in an airtight container.
