Video: How to Use a Whetstone
Thursday August 14, 2008
Here's another video tutorial, this one on how to sharpen a knife with a whetstone. It's a popular topic, likely because using a whetstone is something that takes a bit of practice to get right.
It's a good skill to have, though, because a sharp knife is an absolute necessity in the kitchen. And while using a whetstone the wrong way can do more harm than good, that doesn't mean you shouldn't bother learning how to do it. But if you have an older chef's knife — you know, that dull one in the back of the drawer that you never use anyway — that might be a good knife to practice with.

I was starting to look at expensive sharpeners and realized that maybe I was using my whetstone incorrectly. Well sure enough so thanks for this video! Saved me some $$!!
Thanks for your comment. I’m glad the video helped you out.
I have a 50 yr. old whetstone is in fair condidion and i was wondering if i could sharpen my Gerber Suspension Tool on it. It seems to work fine but I just want to make sure that it wouldn’t be a problem to my knife.
I don’t see why not — assuming the stone is in good shape, no cracks etc. Obviously, I would only sharpen the knife blade parts, not the saw or the pliers or what-have-you. But you already knew that.
